Dear colleagues,

It is my great pleasure and honour to welcome you in my capacity as the President of our Association since the beginning of 2014. Without your kind support and active contribution it would be difficult to expand our specialty in terms of recognition of our profession and greater integration with the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The executive team had a very busy and productive year and we are hoping for this to continue in the next year ahead. We set our targets very high and the main focus was the reinstatement of our surgical exam. ACSA has recognised the importance and the validity of this Exit Exam and we all greatly appreciate your immense interest across the UK. The pathway was not easy, particularly after losing the supervision and support of the Royal College of Surgeons of England at the early stages this year. Thanks to Mr. Tim Graham, the President of the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery, there are prospects for the future of our specialty nationwide. I could not emphasise strongly enough the importance of the collaboration with the SCTS and commitment and support which they have provided to our association and our members. With this in mind, great effort has been put into organising the Exit Exam, which ran successfully in early December, and which is now supported and certified by RCS in Edinburgh, SCTS and ACSA. Our aim is to continue with this exam on an annual basis, depending on the interest and the number of the candidates. We are going to continue to work very closely with the RCS of Edinburgh and the SCTS in developing the high standard required and the profile of this exam which will remain our main Professional Diploma. I would encourage all trainee SCPs to support this and apply for this exit exam in the future. Our educational team, which is lead by Mrs. Bhuvana Bibleraaj, received very positive feed back regarding the Conduits Master class course in November. The team have taken the feedback on board and are now in the midst of organising the Thoracic Master Class course set for April 2015. We certainly hope that it will be an excellent starting point for continued regular professional development for all SCPs nationally. I wish to express our sincere thanks and recognition for the excellent work of the all ACSA Executive members: Mr. Simon Kendal, SCTS Secretary; Mr. Lewis, SCTS Educational Lead and Ethicon Company for their generous help and their organisational and financial support of these events. ACSA Membership is very important for continuation of our hard work towards the final recognition of our profession, so I would encourage you all to renew your old membership and for the new prospective members to understand the importance of gathering our team closely and supporting each other. Colleagues can ask me what I will gain by becoming a member and now I can proudly say with great pride that they can expect a completely new concept, support from not only the majority of the surgeons in the country, but also an amazing and robust educational program with potential for further development, MA courses, SCP led national audits, SCTS membership and the Exit exam. Your help is always more than welcome and I would encourage those interested in an Executive team role to step forward, we welcome your new ideas and hope you will support the association in the future. I would like to use this opportunity to send my best wishes to those that undertook the exam on Thursday,18th December in Birmingham with the anticipation of good results. Our ACSA web page is about to go through a rebuild so I would encourage you to visit our website, and through the forums and interactions we hope you will suggest more improvements and advancements to our association and our profession in the future. I truly hope that the next SCTS Meeting in March 2015, to be held in Manchester, will be the next point of meet with you all and I would encourage you to attend our AGM meeting (details will be confirmed on ACSA website soon). In front of the ACSA I would like to thank you all for your support and membership, in the past and in future, and I wish you all a happy and restful Christmas holiday.

Yours sincerely, Mrs. Jasmina Djordjevic - ACSA President
